Highly Birefringent (HiBi)

A highly birefringent optical device has a different index of refraction along each orthogonal axis.  In crystals these can be referred to as ordinary and extraordinary axes, though in fiber optics it is more common to describe them as the fast axis and slow axis.  HiBi fibers will maintain the polarization state of light as the large difference in refractive index between axes act to substantially reduce the probability of cross coupling.
