Elliptical Clad Fiber

If the core of a fiber is highly elliptical it can present some birefringence to the light depending on whether the electric field is aligned along the major or minor axes. If the light is polarized such that the field is aligned with the major axis, the light sees a higher refractive index and is therefore the slow axis.
