Process Control Engineer

Fibercore is a market leader in the field of ‘Specialty’ optical fibers. Originally a technology spin-out from the University of Southampton and now celebrating over 30 years in business, we export more than 95% of our production to around 50 countries worldwide. Our innovative products are used in a diverse range of industrial sectors including aerospace, telecommunications, energy and fundamental research – and have been deployed quite literally from Southampton to Mars!

Based at Fibercore House and reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this full time hands-on role is responsible for driving Continuous Improvement, developing and refining existing processes and the introduction of new technology aimed at improving yield, process control, capability, waste and quality.

As a key part of manufacturing, and working with other members of the Engineering and Production teams responsibilities will include:

- Improving the reliability and control on all our optical fiber manufacturing processes from beginning to end, including measurements;
- Identifying yield and efficiency improvements by reducing costs and minimising bottlenecks, including maximising the use of automation and digitalisation and analysing of the various process parameters;
- Identifying and correcting quality issues as well as driving quality improvements;
- Advising on equipment modification to enable process changes and improvement for both existing, and new products, including software and hardware equipment engineering;
- Identifying possible changes or improvements to raw materials, components and / or process parameters to ensure quality is continuously improved and disruption to production kept to a minimum;
- Reading and writing technical reports and specifications;
- Ensuring all process documentation is clear, accurate, sufficient and up-to-date;
- Initiating, designing and implementing new ideas in collaboration with both the R&D and Production teams;
- Identifying and optimising the flow of information and communication, as well as collecting and analysing data in order to improve efficiency and quality.

 



Necessary qualifications.

To be considered for this role you will need to have a good university honours degree, or higher, in chemistry or engineering with a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in advanced process control, including programming skills and the ability to use commercial software/firmware to design Human Machine Interface and Data Acquisition systems. Experience in the field of optical fiber manufacturing and an understanding of customer fiber applications would be a significant plus. 

Similarly you will need to have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills including a proven record of process control and SPC.  Given the importance of implementing change and new ideas, organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills to be able to influence and motivate people effectively will be a key attribute.  Equally, being a self-starter, able to work autonomously and yet still be a team player will be critical to your success in this role.

Account Manager - Europe

Reporting to the SVP of Global Sales, this full-time, permanent role is responsible for the direct and indirect sales of the full range of our specialty optical fibers in the European territory, with the exception of Russia and France.  The successful candidate will be responsible for:

- Building strong relationships with customers through excellent customer service;
- Maintaining regular contact with customers by telephone, email and face-to-face meetings;
- Preparing quotations and technical information for customer applications;
- Presenting corporate and technical presentations to customers;
- Generating new opportunities;
- Identifying potential customers, initiating contact to scope out the extent of the business opportunity;
- Developing and implementing winning sales strategies;
- Liaising with Production, Quality and Development to ensure customer requirements are met
- Attending and participating at international trade shows;
- Managing and supporting resellers in Europe;
- Gathering market data and reporting it to management;
- Providing accurate sales forecasting (quarterly and yearly) by customer and application.

 



Necessary qualifications.

We are looking for someone who is qualified to degree level in a science-related subject with a minimum of two years’ proven experience in a technical sales role, although having a Masters or higher in a relevant discipline would be advantageous. Given the nature of the position, a strong technical and analytical ability will be crucial together with a strong attention to detail.  You will need to be proficient in relevant software, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel as well as CRM packages such as Salesforce.  Similarly, first rate interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential as is the ability to add technical value to customer projects.

We are looking for someone for whom delivering customer satisfaction is a top priority, who has both business acumen and a customer focused approach to building excellent working relationships with our customers. Likewise you will need to be a team player able to interact collaboratively with colleagues from other functional areas.

With the majority of our customers being overseas, you will be required to travel in the UK and overseas for meetings, trade shows, presentations and technical discussions on a regular basis.  Therefore, language skills and exposure to different cultures would be beneficial.
